YHS freshman wins medal at statewide math league competition
Raul Negrete is a freshman at Yuma High School who won a fourth-place medal at a Math League competition hosted by Pima Community College on Friday, October 26.
Negrete was one of 10 members of the Yuma High Math Club to take part in the competition, which included high schools from across the state.
“This is a great achievement and is a testament to Raul’s mathematical abilities,” YHS teacher and Math Club adviser Marelis Rivera said. “The exams that students take in these contests are very rigorous. His award shows not only math skills but also mental endurance, as students underwent about 4 hours of testing during the competition. We have some amazing and talented students at Yuma High and I am so proud to be their teacher and club sponsor.”
Local qualifying tournaments are held throughout the school year at various sites.
Within space limitations at each site, schools may attend any or all of these tournaments in an attempt to qualify for the state meet. Each event has a cutoff score, and all students and teams attaining the cutoff score will be invited to compete at the state championship in April, according to mathleague.org.
