Humane Society of Yuma continues seasonal adoption special through month of October
Black cats often follow a superstitious stigma around the Halloween holiday, but the Humane Society of Yuma is hoping to help owners believe that black cats can be lucky.
Throughout the remainder of October, HSOY is offering their “Orange is the New Black Adoption Special.”
For the special, 50% will be waived off the adoption fee of all black and orange cats and kittens at the shelter.
“If there’s a little spot or orange or a little spot of black, we might make the exception as well,” said Lana Shapiro with the Humane Society.
Black cats have become a common theme in seasonal marketing for Halloween such as decor items and displays.
Often times; however , black cats are also lumped into superstitious categories with the idea that they are bad luck or associated with witches.
This may lead to potential adopters avoiding this color of cat .
Some shelters do not even adopt out black cats around Halloween according to an article in the OC Register .
According to the article, those with black cats are encouraged to keep them indoors around Halloween .
Why indoors you may ask?
Oddly enough, black cats are unfortunately used and even killed in cultish rituals or ceremonies around the time of the ghoulish holiday.
