Women use sunroof to escape from submerged car in canal

A mother and daughter managed to escape their car after it fell into a canal at the intersection of Avenue D and County 15th Street Thursday night.

Somerton Cocopah Fire Department said fire crews along with Somerton Police Department responded to a car in a canal with occupants at 6:05 p.m. at the intersection of Avenue D and County 15th Street.

According to witnesses, a silver Honda Civic with two occupants was turning southeast at the intersection when the Honda went off the road and into a large irrigation canal. Authorities said that the mother and daughter managed to exit the car using its sunroof.

Fire officials added that the canal had about three feet of water and the car was partially submerged.

The two women refused treatment and stated they did not suffer injuries.
