YUHSD to participate in “Great Arizona Shakeout”
The Yuma Union High School District will participate in the 2018 “Great Arizona Shakeout” to practice how to remain safe during magnitude earthquakes on Thursday, October 18, at 10:18 a.m.
This event has been organized to help individuals, their communities, schools, and organizations to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies, and to also secure space to prevent damage and injuries.
“That’s the ideal practice that we want kids, and adults, doing,” Arizona Shakeout Coordinator and Arizona Geological Survey Research Scientist Michael Conway said. If they learn how to do it now, it’s something they will know how to do the rest of their lives.”
Arizonans have experienced more than 3,000 earthquakes since 1852, including a magnitude 5.3 near Duncan, Arizona in 2014.
The expectation is that no matter where you are at 10:18 a.m. you should Drop, Cover and Hold On as if there was a major earthquake occurring at that very moment, and stay in that position for at least 60 seconds.
This is the seventh year Arizona has participated and more than 75,000 are expected to participate in the event.
