Judge in Luigi Mangione’s state trial rules jurors will be anonymous

NEW YORK CITY (NBC, KYMA) - The jury in Luigi Mangione's state trial will be anonymous, a judge has ruled.

Mangione appeared in a New York courtroom Tuesday morning where plans for his state murder trial were being finalized.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to several state charges in connection with the December 2024 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside of a New York hotel.

If convicted, the 28-year-old faces up to life in prison.

At Tuesday's hearing, Justice Gregory Carro also ordered the prosecution and defense teams to work together to create a jury questionnaire, which is designed to give the judge and attorneys a sense of a potential juror's background and beliefs.

Jury selection is set to begin September 8.

The judge's ruling that those jurors are to remain anonymous is becoming increasingly common in high-profile cases in New York.

Also at the hearing, the judge said an overflow courtroom would be made available for press and the public.

Mangione is also facing federal charges tied to Thompson's death. That case is slated to begin in January.
