Former Illinois deputy found guilty of murder in Sonya Massey’s death

(NBC, KYMA) - A former Illinois sheriff's deputy was found guilty of murder Wednesday in the death of Sonya Massey.

Sean Grayson was on trial in the 2024 killing of Massey, a Black mother of two who had called 911 about a possible prowler.

A jury found him guilty of second-degree murder after jurors deliberated for about 11 hours after closing arguments ended late Tuesday morning.

Grayson faces four to 20 years in prison. He's due back in court on January 29, 2026 for his sentencing.
