FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Tracking hotter temperatures and high humidity through the weekend

A Weather Authority First Alert Action Day is staying in effect until 8 pm Sunday due the hot and humid weather. I am tracking slightly hotter and near record temperatures this weekend. I am also watching for any rain and storm potential late in the weekend.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - An Extreme Heat Warning is still in effect until 8 p.m. SUNDAY for the entire Desert Southwest due to dangerously hot and humid conditions.

Highs will be between 104-117 degrees, and overnight lows between 80-93 degrees. With the heat and higher humidity, heat index levels will also be high. Our "feels like temperatures" will be between 110-120 degrees.

When it is hot and we have higher humidity, it makes it feel hotter and also makes it harder to cool down. Moist air limits evaporation, which makes it harder too cool the body and also feels very uncomfortable.

That is why it is very important to practice heat safety to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Looking at our weekend setup, a ridge of high pressure will be keeping the Desert Southwest hot and trending several degrees above-average. Our heat stress levels will be in the dangerous and extreme category.

This ridge of high pressure will stay in place toward the east, keeping the Desert Southwest hot and also filtering higher monsoonal moisture this weekend.

Taking a look at our weather pattern set up for Sunday, moisture levels will increase with higher chances for storms and potential Sunday and into early next week. This could lead to flooding potential in parts of our area if any storms do develop.

Tracking scattered showers and storms being possible late Saturday night and into Sunday.
