Southwest held hitless in CIF Championship
Eagles fall 7-0 to Olympian in first CIF title appearance since 2018
LA JOLLA, Calif. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - Olympian scored two runs in the top of the first inn ing and two more in the second to set the tone in a 7-0 win over Southwest on Saturday afternoon. For Southwest, it was the softball program's first appearance in a CIF San Diego Section Championship game since 2018.
"Our motto since the start of the year was all gas, no breaks," Head coach Joel Manzano said. "Also 5-3-1, we talked about that number a lot and it represents this date and we made it."
The Eagles bats were silenced by Olympian pitcher Alexandra Perez who tossed a complete game no-hitter.
"I'm beyond proud of this team," Manzano said. "Hats off to Olympian and hats off to their pitcher, she was in the zone all day long and she kept us off balance. I am extremely proud of this group. This group is resilient, we had a league title right in our hands, we played tremendous softball in our non-league games, our league games and all through playoffs."
Manzano's team is still very young with pitchers Alexis Trujillo and Nicole Verdugo just freshman.
"They're going to come back hungry," Manzano said. "We have a group of six juniors coming back, sadly we say goodbye to four seniors but, we have some freshman and sophomores that took a lot of growing here. Our freshman in the circle (Trujillo), they scored a lot of runs. They punched us in the mouth, and she was able to fight through the whole game. She threw all seven innings. She was there to compete and we'll be back here next year."
