San Pasqual senior Aysha Kenney Rios takes her track and field talents to the AIA state meet

YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - San Pasqual senior Aysha Kenney Rios always knew she had the talent to make the AIA state track and field championship, however, COVID-19 kept her and her teammates on the sidelines.

"As far as I know I could’ve gone to state in those years," Kenney Rios said. "COVID took that away from me and I was really sad because a lot of people had faith in me and my coach saw the potential in me too, I was pretty devastated."

It wasn't just Aysha's chance at competing in the state meet that was dashed, all of San Pasqual's sports teams took a hit.

"COVID took a toll on us," San Pasqual assistant track and field coach Tom Fernandez said. "Right from the start. I think Aysha could've gone to state and done something."

Fernandez says COVID took its toll on Aysha in the fact that she started to doubt herself.

"We built up her confidence," Fernandez said. "To the point where she can really really give it what she needs. Her perseverance, the ability to regroup and focus. For her size, she's over the top."

San Pasqual's Aysha Kenney Rios preps before Tuesday's AIA state meet

Aysha's hard work and determination metamorphosed into qualifying for the AIA state track meet this season, her senior year. She is the only athlete from San Pasqual to qualify.

"This year I have that chance, that gold medal I've wanted so much," Kenney Rios said. "I just want to try my best to get it."

Aysha will compete in the AIA state 100 and 200 meter races today at 3:00 p.m. at Mesa Community College against the top runners in the state.

"She competes against the best of the best and has proven she belongs there," Fernandez said. "The whole San Pasqual staff and students, she’s loved by everybody and that’s what's going to make it special."
