NBC 11 Sports: Matadors make strong statement with perfect volleyball start, soccer shutout

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Arizona Western College (AWC) is off to a hot start, with both volleyball and women's soccer earning impressive wins.

The Matadors volleyball team finished the Chapman Automotive Invitational a perfect 3-0, sweeping all three games to close out the weekend at The House.

AWC will look to stay unbeaten next weekend at the Wrangler Ranger Roundup Tournament in Texas.

On the soccer pitch, the Matadors opened their season with a dominant 4-0 shutout over Utah State Eastern.

Freshman Giovana Coutinho scored twice, while Abril Aguirre and Reina Kasano each added a goal.

AWC finished with 20 shots on goal, while goalkeeper Victoria Yuna and the defense secured the clean sheet.

Both Matadors programs are off to strong starts as the 2026 season gets underway.
