NBC 11 Sports: State champions invest time in Yuma wrestling’s future

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Some of Yuma County's best wrestlers are making sure their success doesn't stop with them.

Kofa High School state champions Logan Whitacre and David Elias, along with Gila Ridge state champion Cannon Farrar, hosted the Back-to-School State Champ Camp at Matador Wrestling Club, passing along the techniques and mindset that helped them win state titles to the next generation of local wrestlers.

For Whitacre, the goal was to help young athletes see what it takes to become champions themselves.

"We've been wanting to do this for a while," Whitacre said. "Where we get the state champs to just share the knowledge to all the Yuma kids on how they became successful. And just show the future of the kids. So they know how to become a state champion too maybe you know."

Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres completed a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins with a 5-3 comeback victory at LoanDepot Park.

After falling behind 3-0 early, Manny Machado fueled the rally with an RBI double before tying the game with a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

Jackson Merrill followed with the go-ahead solo homer, and Luis Campusano added an insurance RBI single before closer Mason Miller shut the door in the ninth.

The win extended Miami's losing streak to a franchise-record 12 games while the Padres continue to build momentum.
