NBC 11 Sports: Seven local teams hit the field for another day of 7 vs 7 football, IVC responds to naming new mascot

YUMA, Ariz., (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma Catholic hosted the first night of its yearly 7 vs 7 football camp - welcoming in six other schools from Yuma and Calexico from the Imperial Valley on Tuesday.

The Shamrocks took their home field after coming off of several weekends of 7 vs 7 at San Diego State - and also after being named No. 16 in the list of Top 20 most dominant teams over the last decade by MaxPreps late last week.

"I mean it means a lot. It's a testament to our hard work and all the kids that have come through the program and what they have done. We're excited to get the recognition and be one of the only small schools on there but it's in the past and we gotta continue to move forward and do what we can to live up to that reputation and see what we can do to win another state title," said head coach Rhett Stallworth. "Some of those steps towards that are what we're doing right now. Any time we can get in extra work, that's what we're trying to do and just make sure that we hit the season prepared and disciplined and ready to go."

Three teams with first-year head coaches made the trip to Ricky Gwynn Stadium - including Miguel Rivas for San Pasqual, Hector Ramirez for Antelope, and Armando Mosqueda taking the reigns for the Yuma Criminals after their best season in decades.

The Kofa Kings also made their first appearance in 7 vs 7 this summer under the leadership of Pablo Cota - who just took over last season when the Kings won their first game in five years. He and the program are excited to get back to another fall season and show off the work they've been putting in.

"The guys are excited. We have been putting in the work since January," said Pablo Cota. "I'm happy with what we've got right now, moving forward with this off-season in summer workouts. I'm excited, I can't wait for the season to start so we can prove ourselves as who's the new King around town."

Meanwhile, Imperial Valley College is under a new era after officially naming their new mascot on Monday. They will now be the "Desert Warriors" after getting 48% of the vote over two other names.

The school says they are now working on the next step - which is creating a design for the new mascot.

"We are going to work with a marketing and design specialist, if that's a firm or individual we're not sure yet," said Director of Student Development, Yareli Rivera. "We're going to have those conversations and have them help us come up with the design for the new mascot"

Rivera added that the rollout for the new design should be ready by this fall.
