Latest on AI-actress Tilly Norwood receiving Hollywood level backlash

LOS ANGELES (CBS, KYMA) - A new star is born. Well, not exactly born as Tilly Norwood is the first actor generated by artificial intelligence (AI), and it is generating Hollywood level backlash.

Norwood looks awfully human, but she's not as she is the brainchild of Dutch comedian Eline Van der Velden, who founded the AI-centered production company, Particle6, where Norwood was created.

Her existence has set off backlash throughout Hollywood after agencies considered "signing" Norwood as a client, according to Deadline.

"It's not a game," said actor Sean Astin, who was recently elected president of SAG-AFTRA, which went on strike in 2023 in part to protect actors from AI. "Tilly Norwood is an artificial construct. You are made up of stuff that doesn't belong to you. So let's just make sure that credit is given where credit is due."

Van der Velden defended her creation, calling AI a "new tool," saying in part, "I hope we can welcome AI as part of the wider artistic family."

AI is already at work in Hollywood. It de-aged actor Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," but it has yet to take on lead roles.

When asked what a human actor brings that an AI-generated actor can't, Astin said, "It's too simple to say authenticity, but you know, we...you can fall in love. Your parents can die. You can be in some terrifying situation...the sum of all of our emotional experiences in our life, artificial intelligence can approximate it...[but] it is not real."
