Orangutans at Milwaukee County Zoo celebrate 43rd and 44th birthday

MILWAUKEE (CBS, KYMA) - Orangutans at a zoo in Milwaukee celebrated their birthdays in style, with themed treats to mark them turning 43 and 44 within a day of each other.

Footage shared by the Milwaukee County Zoo shows orangutans Alex and Tommy tucking into food in the shape of their new ages.

The zoo said Alex turned 43 on March 17, and Tommy turned 44 on March 18.

On a more serious note, the zoo drew attention to the plight of the animals in the wild.

"Bornean orangutans are listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, largely due to habitat destruction from deforestation," the zoo wrote on Facebook.

It included advice about how to make "orangutan-friendly choices" when shopping, specifically by seeking out products with RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil.
