Calexico residents react to Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Following her historic win earlier this year, Claudia Sheinbaum has officially been sworn in as Mexico's first female president on Tuesday.
Sheinbaum, who was the Mayor of Mexico City, defeated her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, by leading with almost 60% of the votes back in June of this year.
In addition to being the first female president of Mexico, Sheinbaum also made history as Mexico's first leader of Jewish heritage.
Sheinbaum is also a member of the leftist "Morena" party, established 13 years ago by Obrador, according to sources.
A Calexico City Council candidate, Diana Nuricimbo, shared her thoughts on what Sheinbaum's inauguration means to her:
"It certainly opens a door for a lot of us women who want to be more involved in our government, and we believe that we have the ability to be there to hold those types of positions because the woman is naturally an honest person and we can do a lot of things at the same time."
Nuricumbo also says this will benefit both sides of the border adding, "Mexicali has a woman mayor, they have a woman governor and now a woman president and I believe Calexico will also have some women on the council and we will definitely work together."
A migrant from Mexico City says he wants Sheinbaum to bring stability to Mexico saying, "I really hope she helps people to have more jobs...more security...and to have less violence."
