Yuma Police Department accepting applications for Teen Police Academy
The Teen Police Academy will be held from Monday, July 10 to Thursday, July 13
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Police Department (YPD) is having its first Teen Police Academy designed to educate teens about the daily operations of the department.
The academy will give teens an opportunity to see how the police department operates and get some hands-on instruction on various topics relating to police work.
Classes at the academy include daily police procedures, building searches, decision-making scenarios, K9 demonstrations, Crime Scene Processing, Narcotics, Gangs, Animal Control, Driving Under the Influence, and Traffic Laws.
There will also be a tour of the department.
The academy will be held from July 10 to July 13, along with a graduation on the last day.
The classes will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be at the police department located at 1500 South 1st Avenue and at the Public Safety Training Facility located at 3575 South Avenue 4E.
According to YPD, applicants must be 14-16 years old and pass a background check.
The class size is limited to 14 participants due to scenario-based training and there is no fee for attending the academy.
Applications for the academy can be picked up at the YPD Records window located at 1500 South 1st Avenue.
Electronic applications can be requested and will be sent through email.
YPD said the deadline for application submissions is on Friday, June 30, or until 14 participants fill the class.
