The Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area and the Chicano Art Collective showcase "Dia De Los Muertos"

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - To the Latin culture Dia De Los Muertos is a time of celebration. A time where the border between the living and those who have passed on fades away.

Across the globe people of Latin and European decent welcome their lost loved ones back into their homes and back into their lives. Altars are placed as a gateway between this realm and the beyond. The altar is decorated and relics and charms are placed on them to celebrate loved ones.

The Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area and the Chicano Art Collective held a special Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the Dead celebration and in it, altars were placed inside the cells.

Tourists not only received a look into life in the old west but also a glimpse into a celebration unlike any other. Local historian Tina Clark is fascinated with Latin culture and admits that this celebration is one of her favorites.

For more information on the altars at the Yuma Territorial Prison, you can visit the park's website.
