The story of Cafecito and its new location

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) -Cafecito Coffee Company opened three years ago. Their mission, of course to serve a good cup of joe, but also, honor the legacy of their son.

Travis Krizay and Ashley Simms, the owners of Cafecito lost their two year old son, Atticus to a drowning accident in 2018.

The two say running the coffee shop is helping them heal and hope it’s leaving an impact on the Yuma Community.

“It kind of brought us back to life and we actually had a customer pointed out today that there was, around when we opened, she could feel the love but the pain in our hearts,” said the owners.

Cafecito started out in a trailer and now just recently re-located to main street, in the heart of Downtown Yuma.

“We lost our son Atticus to drowning and we really wanted to walk away. We had some very close people to us tell us that we owed it to ourselves and to our son to see the project through.”

As the weather heats up, Travis and Ashley also want to make other parents aware of the risk of drowning.

“You never let a child under five leave your sight for a moment, and it’s something that you take for granted until tragedy strikes. The last time I saw him, to the 9-1-1 call, it was less than three minutes,” said the couple.

They started a non-profit called the Atticus Kindness Project, which gives back to the Yuma Community, as they helped them out so much during their time of need.

The Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona asks households to remain on high alert as temperatures start to rise and more people will be near swimming pools.
