New border entrance in Calexico
MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA, KECY)-As part of the modernization works of the Mexicali-Calexico sentry, access to the standard lane was relocated by Colón Poniente avenue (west-east direction) and the Río Nuevo border vehicular bridge.
This is due to the construction crossing by Colón Poniente Avenue as part of the second phase of the modernization work.
The construction of the overpass will avoid the congestion caused by the railroad crossing that interrupted vehicular and pedestrian traffic that circulate towards American customs.
The work will be 445.6 meters long, includes a bridge for the railroad crossing, a vehicular bridge, and a pedestrian crossing.
The vehicular crossing on Colón Avenue will be closed from Bravo Street.
The construction is estimated to be completed by December.
With the new overpass, the west gate will have two entrances to Calexico along the standard lanes, since access will remain through the Rio Nuevo border bridge.
According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, in response to increased demand, CBP will be expanding the operational hours for SENTRI traffic at the Calexico East port of entry by two hours in the evenings. Effective June 3, SENTRI hours of operation will be from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
