President Trump greets Chinese President Jinping ahead of summit meeting

WASHINGTON (CBS, KYMA) - President Donald Trump choppered to Joint Base Andrews Wednesday afternoon to greet Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of an upcoming summit meeting.

It is the first time in over 60 years a U.S. president has made that gesture to a foreign head of state.

During Thursday's summit meeting, Presidents Trump and Jinping are expected to discuss a variety of topics, including artificial intelligence regulation and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

However, video of the meeting will be sparse as five U.S. TV networks, including CBS News, continue their suspension of White House pool coverage after Trump banned three news outlets from the White House.

While speaking with CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil, Face the Nation moderator and CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan talked about Trump welcoming Jinping, as well as the upcoming summit.

"Whenever the two most powerful men in the world meet, there's typically a lot of picture rich choreography. China's media state [is] controlled...but this time, it's different. The pictures won't be, beamed around the world in the same way, and that's of concern to some of the Chinese officials I spoke with, in part, because Xi Jinping lands here feeling he has the upper hand in the competition with the U.S. According to multiple Asian diplomats, Trump needs China to stop buying Iranian oil. He wants them to stop providing intelligence to Tehran. China has also cornered the market on a really critical set of ingredients for U.S.-made weapons and technology. On the other hand, the question for Trump is whether he wants to extend it for how long the trade truce with. China and of course there are two Americans being wrongfully detained."
