Preview of Norah O’Donnell’s 60 Minutes report on the ongoing war with Iran

(CBS, KYMA) - For the season premiere of 60 Minutes, CBS News' Norah O'Donnell went to the Pentagon to report on the ongoing war with Iran, including the rescue of two American pilots shot down over Iran.

The U.S. and Iran are trading attacks near the Strait of Hormuz, with the U.S. sinking oil tankers in the latest in an escalation that President Donald Trump has vowed to continue.

"You're going to see a lot more. We've taken out about nine of their tankers. Many of them are dunzo," President Trump shared.

Trump now says the war will end "immediately" after the midterm elections. However, when O'Donnell met with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth last month, he declined to give specifics.

During the interview, O'Donnell asked Secretary Hegseth what victory would look like in Iran to the American people, and the secretary said:

"That's probably a topic for another interview, But-- the more we look and understand what's been done on the ground...the devastation done to Iranian military capabilities is historic in proportions. And, we have all the control in the world about what this outcome looks like...and the president has put us in a fantastic position."

The Trump Administration said it has dismantled Iran's military capabilities, but in April, the Iranians were able to shoot down a U.S. fighter plane with a shoulder fired missile, stranding two Air Force officers behind enemy lines.

On this Sunday's 60 minutes, the colonel who spent two days evading capture spoke with O'Donnell exclusively.

"That day was just another day in the war for us, until the moment where we got hit by an Iranian weapon," the colonel said.

Admiral Brad Cooper is the American commander in charge of the war and the rescue operation.

When asked how many missiles does Iran have, Admiral Cooper said, "I think best not to talk about from an operational security perspective of what we know of what they have...given where we are."
