Son of man shot and killed by ICE in Houston criticizes city leaders

HOUSTON (CBS, KYMA) - The son of a Houston man shot dead by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent criticized multiple city leaders for doing less than New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in the wake of his father's killing.

Ronaldo Salgado, the son of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was originally from Mexico, issued a plea to city council members to do more during a speech at City Hall Tuesday.

Although he praised Houston Mayor John Whitmire and council members Joaquin Martinez and Willie Davis, he asked of other leaders, "How have ya'll showed up for my family? Not one peep from some of ya'll."

"Where is the basic human decency? How is it that the mayor of New York City can acknowledge this injustice from afar?"

He continued, "Aren't you supposed to represent the entire city of Houston? Or does your sympathy for humanity end when it comes to East End and Magnolia Park neighborhoods?"

Ronaldo Salgado also asked local leaders to do more to protect immigrant communities in the city following the fatal shooting.

He said, "How will you show up for the rest of the immigrant community here in Houston to make sure that what happened to my dad…doesn't happen to any of them?"

"This isn't a partisan issue. This is an issue of right and wrong, and this wrong needs to be addressed," he said.

Salgado said his family was calling for "a full, independent, transparent investigation, justice for my father, and for this to never happen again."

At the end of his speech, he said, "The whole world is looking at us, and I invite you guys to be on the right side of history."
