FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Tracking spooky conditions and Halloween shower chances

Weather Authority / KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Halloween is bringing a chance of rain to the Desert Southwest this year, as cooler temperatures and unsettled weather moves into the region through the weekend.

Families planning to head out for trick-or-treating Saturday evening should keep an eye on the forecast, as rain chances are expected to increase throughout the night across Yuma and Imperial counties. Be sure to pack an umbrella.

In Yuma, there's a 30% chance of showers Saturday afternoon, increasing to 90% overnight. Rainfall amounts are expected to range between a tenth and a quarter of an inch.

El Centro is also expected to see showers overnight, with an 80% chance of rain and similar rainfall amounts.

Showers could linger into Sunday morning, with an 80% chance of precipitation for both Yuma and El Centro. Yuma could see additional rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch, while El Centro is forecast to receive between a tenth and a quarter of an inch.

While widespread heavy rainfall is not expected across the immediate Yuma area, periods of rain could lead to some ponding on roadways and rising water levels in local washes.

An atmospheric river will bring more widespread rainfall to portions of central and eastern Arizona, where saturated soils could increase runoff and flooding concerns. A Flood Watch is in effect for much of central and eastern Arizona through Sunday night.

There is also a chance for isolated strong to severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening, mainly east of the Colorado River, with damaging winds being the primary concern.

Along with the rain, temperatures will remain noticeably cooler across the region. Yuma is forecast to reach a high near 76 degrees Sunday, while El Centro will top out around 75 degrees.

Overnight lows will drop into the upper 50s for both communities before sunshine returns Monday. Highs are expected to reach around 78 degrees in Yuma and El Centro.

Conditions will begin drying out early next week, with temperatures gradually warming closer to seasonal averages by the middle of the week.

For those celebrating Halloween, be sure to have a light jacket and an umbrella handy, as showers could make for a wet evening. Otherwise, enjoy the cooler temperatures as we head into the new week!
