Tuesday marks five years since the Jan. 6 riot

(NBC, KYMA) - Tuesday marks the fifth anniversary of the riot at the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

On January 6, 2021, thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump marched to Capitol Hill and stormed the building in an attempt to disrupt the official certification by Congress of the 2020 election, which was won by former President Joe Biden.

The events of that day led to numerous injuries and even some deaths as police clashed with the rioters. More than 100 officers were injured in the attack.

A plaque, authorized by Congress in 2022, honoring those officers has yet to be installed on the west front of the Capitol, and is now the subject of a federal lawsuit.

After taking office for his second term last January, President Trump pardoned all Jan. 6 defendants, including former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, for their actions that day.

Later on Tuesday, many of the people who took part in that riot five years ago plan to march in Washington, D.C. to mark the anniversary.
