Tom Horne visits San Luis High School

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction made his first visit to Yuma since being inaugurated in January.

After discussing education with local educators, teachers, and parents yesterday, today he chose to visit one local high school to recognize its excellence.
“We decided to drive down to San Luis to recognize real excellence. We noticed in the department of education, they went from a D school to a B school in one year," said Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Horne.

San Luis High School was the only school Tom Horne visited on his trip to Yuma County.

Horne mentioned he was very impressed with the school.

“In terms of percentage of students going to college adjusted for demographics, this school is off the charts,” said Horne.

San Luis High has a college going rate of over 61% of graduates compared to the state average of about 46%.

The principal of San Luis showed the superintendent around several different Career and Technical Education classes with hands on learning.
“Our kids love the classes in career and technical education, they love their engineering classes, law and public safety, some of the things we saw today,” said San Luis principal Robert Jankowski.
“I saw a very dedicated impressive engineering instructor. He has the students design different things and then build them. That way they get exposed to different things. They can choose what fits them,” said Horne.

The principal said out of all the schools in Yuma County he’s glad Horne chose to visit San Luis.
“Completely honored that he came down to San Luis High School. He could have went to several other schools before coming down here," said Jankowski.
