How Yumans are beating the heat
YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - If you're trying to beat the heat, you're far from alone.
Many Yumans are out and about this Sunday trying to find fun ways to escape the heat and enjoy the last bit of summer before kids head back to the classroom.
It’s a slightly cooler than normal overcast day here in Yuma and locals are still making their way out to the Colorado River at gateway park, trying to beat the heat.
After coming down from the excessive heat warning last week, Yumans are coming out to play.
“With the wind and the overcast it’s really nice to be out here. Just stay cool,” said the Salinas family.
The Salinas family says they come out to enjoy the river often and want people to be aware of the strong current, while still having fun.
“Yeah I like playing and swimming, it’s just I can’t really do that when the current is that strong. Just always keep an eye on your kids, know where they’re at no matter what age, even adults it can happen. Just be aware of the current and your surroundings,” said the Salinas family.
Families from near and far are taking advantage of the high of 104 degrees, after the past two weeks staying steady around 110.
Jesus Murietta drove from Welton to Yuma to spend the day on the river with his family before summer break comes to an end.
“I have my family right there, I took a little swim down the river then came back and it was refreshing, it’s what I need nowadays,” said Murietta.
And beating the heat won’t be this easy for teens and children once school goes back in session.
The first day of school is fast approaching, with the Crane School District beginning on Thursday, Yuma School District one starting August 1 and Yuma Union High School District on August 4.
