Yuma veterans given approval to build village

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY)- American Veterans of Yuma have been given the approval to build a veterans village.

Clean up of the land needs to happen before they can break ground and the dumps are no longer accepting free dump unless by pick up trucks and they don't have any pick ups.

A construction company arrived in December but later quit as there was too much to get rid of, and American Veterans in Yuma also paid for several roll-off dumpsters but that got very expensive as well.

The American Veterans are a donation-based organization and would appreciate help from volunteers.

This non-profit organization serves and assists local vets and the veterans village project will help to ensure there are no homeless veterans in Yuma County.

American Veterans Commander… Mike Condon says they are a donation-based organization and would appreciate help from volunteers.

“There are a lot of things we can get done by volunteers. I mean there’s a lot of grunt work and if nothing else, a lot of ideas," said Condon.

If enough volunteers help to get things cleaned up then the project may begin on March 1.

“These are micro mini homes that are basically studio apartments and they’re plenty big for one person or even two,” explained Condon.

When the project is completed there will be roughly 30 micro mini homes ready to house veterans in the foothills.

Condon continued, “The police department, the sheriff department, the hospital, therapy organizations, caregiver organizations, whenever they have a veteran, they send us that veteran and we put them to bed.”

Condon says thanks to this organization there has not been any homeless veterans in yuma for the past 5 years.

But the demand for housing will always be there, this is just a step in the right direction.

The American Veterans of Yuma plan to continue the project and have two additional pieces of land they are negotiating with… to add to the 30 that will be built starting in March.
