CBS 13 Sports: Phil’s sluggish start

San Diegan Phil Mickelson has a rough start to the 121st U.S. Open at Torrey Pines

LA JOLLA, Calif. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - After winning the PGA Championship last month, San Dieagan and Arizona State alum Phil Mickelson set his sights on another milestone. Winning the 121st U.S. Open in his backyard at Torrey Pines. It's a tournament he's yet to win and Thursday's opening round didn't provide him favors.

"Fought hard, made a lot of short putts to keep myself in it, then I ended up bogeying six and seven," Mickelson said. "Two over would've been a pretty good round. I ended up at four so I am a little disappointed about that. I feel like I'm close and close to putting together a pretty good round."

Mickelson shot a 75 which puts him at four over par after day one and eight shots behind leaders Russell Henley and Louis Oosthuizen, both -4 under par at the time of this story.
