Law enforcement agencies in Yuma County collecting unused prescriptions

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Police Department (YPD) and the Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) are participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) drug take back program this weekend. On Saturday, the law enforcement agencies will be taking any unused or expired medications and over-the-counter pills.

YPD will be holding its event at the local police department at 1500 S. 1st Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can drive by in their cars and drop off pills. Officers can also do contactless pick up if you place the pills in your trunk and drive up.

YCSO will also be holding an event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the YCSO Foothills Substation at 13190 E. South Frontage Rd.

“If you have any leftover drugs for any prescriptions that you’ve had, even any over-the-counter pain meds, if you have leftover stuff, expired stuff, bring it in and we’ll dispose of it properly. That is the important part, that way it doesn’t get in the hands of kids or people who it shouldn’t get into", said Sergeant Lori Franklin with YPD.

Because of the pandemic, the event was put on hold last year. In 2020, Yuma County reported 544 drug-related incidents - a statistic law enforcement agencies in the county want to curb through this program. In previous years, the department also had several drop-off locations at grocery stores around town including Walmart, Sam's Club and Fry's, but that has also been scrapped because of the coronavirus.

YPD tells News 11 the National Guard will also be at the Yuma Police Department to educate the public about drugs and the disposal process. Agents will also be handing out informational pamphlets as well as Naloxone, which is typically used to treat drug overdoses.
