High School Seniors required to take “Civics Test” to graduate
An exam required for high school seniors to graduate is similar to the test applicants take to become a citizen in the United States.
In 2015 Governor Doug Ducey signed legislation requiring high school seniors to pass a basic “Civics Test” in order to graduate. This is the first year the test was implemented asking general questions about our nation’s history and government. Yuma Union High School District Superintendent Toni Badone says about 96 percent of their students have already passed the Civics test with the proof showing up on their transcripts.
“It’s pretty basic, it is multiple choice and I would say that all of the questions are fairly fact based, opposed to any deep understanding to any historical events,” Badone Said.
High school seniors Jacqueline and Jairo says they recognize how important the test is, especially once you graduate high school.
Jacqueline says,” We’re graduating, we’re becoming adults now. We need to know how things run.”
“If you’re going to live here, you got to know how our country was built.” Jairo adds on.
What makes this test interesting is the same questions found on the Civics test are actually the same questions on the U.S. citizenship test for applicants to take for their path to citizenship.
YUHSD graduation date is May 26th 2017, with three percent of seniors in Yuma county still needing to retake the test to graduate.
