President fights back against impeachment
Trump pens blistering letter to Speaker of the House
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY/NBC News) - On the eve of his expected impeachment, President Donald Trump is fighting back.
The President today penned a poisoned letter aimed at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. It blasts House Democrats for what he calls a "sham impeachment process."
The six-page letter goes on to decry the process as an "illegal partisan attempted coup." It also accuses Pelosi of "declaring open war on American democracy."
The full House will vote Wednesday on two articles of impeachment. The first accuses him of abusing power for pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rival while withholding military aid. The second accused him of obstructing Congress.
Republicans are already looking forward to a Senate trial where they'll run the show. Today, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell denied the Democrats' request to call White House witness.
"It's not the Senate's job to leap into the breach and search desperately for ways to get to guilty." said the Kentucky Senator.
Democratic leadership says it's just more obstruction.
"What is Leader McConnell afraid of? What is President Trump afraid of? The truth?" asked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Late Monday afternoon, Democrats announced they have the votes they need to impeach the President. But members of Congress can expect a marathon debate long before a vote is called. KYMA.com will provide livestream coverage of the proceedings.
