Tucson’s sanctuary city initiative divides the city
On Tuesday, Tucson voters will decide whether to make it Arizona’s only sanctuary city. A group of activists wants to revive this part of Tucson’s history, but many disapprove.
The Sanctuary Movement is widely regarded to have begun in Tucson, put forward by churches shielding Central American refugees from deportation, the Associated Press reports.
Proposition 205 will be on the ballot for Tucson voters on November 5, 2019.
A ” yes ” vote would be in favor of the following:
declaring in city code that Tucson is a sanctuary city; restricting law enforcement officers from actions to determine a person’s immigration status under certain conditions; prohibiting officers from contacting federal law enforcement agencies to determine a person’s immigration status; and prohibiting city employees from inquiring about a person’s immigration status, among other policies.
Were the vote to veer left, it would be a major shift from the anti-illegal immigration legislature that Arizona put in place nearly a decade ago, SB1070 .
Many Tucson residents want to make it known they disapprove of President Trump’s policies on immigration, however there are leftists that worry it would cause repercussions from Republican lawmakers, without helping migrants in the end.
