New CNN poll shows economy and President Trump’s unpopularity could hurt GOP in midterms

(CNN, KYMA) - A new poll shows financial concerns and President Donald Trump's unpopularity could hurt the GOP in the midterm elections.

The CNN survey indicates 27% of Americans approve of how he's handling the economy. That's down 22 points from polling ahead of the 2018 midterms when Democrats flipped the House during President Trump's first term.

Two-thirds of registered voters said they consider the economy an "extremely important" factor in the elections.

The poll indicates a shift toward agreeing more with Democrats than Republicans on the issue.

Majorities said tariffs and the Iran war have hurt their personal finances, though gas prices have been steadier in recent days.

In broader terms, the survey indicated voters prefer Democratic candidates to Republican ones by an eight-point margin.

The good news for the GOP is that's more modest than polls showed in 2018.
