Somerton School District employee arrested

UPDATE (5:28 PM): The Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) has provided an update on the Somerton School District employee's arrest.

The arrest happened on the Somerton Middle School campus after 1:30 p.m.

YCSO said a staff member found a makeup bag, but as the staff member was looking inside to figure out who it belonged to, they found a plastic bag containing an unidentified substance.

The staff member, according to YCSO, "turned the bag over the the YCSO School Resource Officer (SRO) who identified the substance as Methamphetamine."

During an additional search of the bag, YCSO identifed the bag's owner as 55-year-old Deana Lynn Salter of Yuma, who was a teacher.

The SRO was said to have made contact with Salter, and she was placed under arrest, with YCSO saying, "No students were involved in the incident."

After that, the Yuma County Narcotics Task Force (YCNTF) took over the investigation, and YCSO said, "The total amount of Methamphetamine was approximately 4.35 grams."

YCNTF processed and booked Salter for possession of dangerous drugs in a drug-free zone, possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and reckless child/vulnerable adult abuse.

If anyone has information regarding the case, call YCSO at 928-783-4427, call 78-CRIME to remain anonymous, or visit YCSO's website to submit anonymous tip.
