CBS 13 Sports: Heroes on the Turf unites Yuma first responders for a winning cause

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Yuma's first responders traded emergency calls for touchdowns during the inaugural Heroes on the Turf Flag Football Battle at Ricky Gwynn Stadium.

The Yuma Fire Department defeated the Yuma Police Department 24-21 in a friendly matchup organized by Arizona Gunslingers Football Academy and Hunter's Army to raise money for local scholarships and families battling childhood cancer. Organizers hope the event becomes an annual tradition after a packed crowd came out to support the cause.

The Bad Rabbits of Calexico are headed to the semifinals of the 2026 NFL FLAG Football Championships in Westfield, Indiana. Representing the San Francisco 49ers, the Imperial Valley squad is competing against the nation's top youth teams with hopes of bringing home a national championship.

Yuma Union High School District and Onvida Health are helping student-athletes get ready for the upcoming school year with free sports physicals at Cibola High School on July 31. The event provides the required exams for AIA participation and will cover athletes for the entire 2026-27 school year.
