NBC 11 Sports: Southwest Summer Champion Classic highlights growth of wrestling in Yuma County

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Wrestlers from across the region took to the mat at Somerton Middle School for the Southwest Summer Champion Classic Wrestling Tournament, showcasing the continued growth of the sport in Yuma County. Hosted by Matador Wrestling Club and Somerton Parks and Recreation, the event brought together more than 90 athletes of all ages, emphasizing competition, character development and valuable mat experience for the next generation of wrestlers.

The tournament comes as several local wrestlers prepare for an even bigger challenge. Matador Wrestling Club standouts Camila Torres and Zoey Bingham qualified to represent Yuma at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota. They will compete against many of the nation's top high school wrestlers in one of the country's premier amateur wrestling events.

Meanwhile, more than 200 young swimmers gathered at the Lions Center Pool in Brawley for the All-County Summer Swim Meet. The facility's first competition since reopening in June after years of renovations. The meet welcomed swimmers from across Imperial County and Yuma, providing athletes of all skill levels an opportunity to compete while celebrating the return of competitive swimming to the renovated pool.
