Teachers hold protest at San Luis border for education reform

KYMA

SAN LUIS, Mexico (KYMA) - Hundreds of teachers from various areas in Sonora took part in a protest Thursday morning.

This included the temporary closure of the San Luis, Río Colorado international border crossing, as part of actions led by the Sonoran Education Workers' Movement.

The teachers gathered at one of the country's key border crossings to demand the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law, as well as changes to the pension and retirement system and better working conditions for the education sector.

According to the organizers, the protest aims to highlight the need for federal and state authorities to address the teaching profession's long-standing demands.

This protest follows an earlier march that drew over 700 participants. Organizers had anticipated an even larger turnout for Thursday's event.

During the border crossing closure, teachers displayed banners and chanted slogans advocating for labor rights and retirement system reform.

Key demands include the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law, a review of the individual pension account program, the establishment of more favorable retirement conditions, and improvements to employment benefits for education workers.
