Curfew around ICE facility in New Jersey lifted

NEWARK, N.J. (NBC, KYMA) - The curfew around a New Jersey ICE facility at the center of recent protests has been lifted.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said, in a statement, the curfew and designated free speech zones around Delaney Hall was lifted at 9 p.m. Eastern Tuesday after protests the day before led to no arrests.

Demonstrators have gathered at the facility for nearly two weeks following reports of detainees going on hunger strike due to inhumane living conditions.

Several of those demonstrations have led to clashes with law enforcement and arrests.

Also on Tuesday, Mayor Baraka doubled down on his efforts to shut down Delaney Hall, saying that the city is expanding its existing lawsuit against GEO Group, the major private prison company that operates the facility, to include health and human safety violations.
