Visiting hours resumes at detention center in New Jersey amid days of protests

NEWARK, N.J. (CBS, KYMA) - Full visitation resumes Monday at a detention center in New Jersey amid days of demonstrations and clashes with law enforcement.

Protestors and police in riot gear faced off again Sunday night near Newark's Delaney Hall ICE detention center, despite a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Eastern curfew imposed by the city in the area.

Video shows at least one demonstrator was taken into custody overnight.

The protests have been going on for more than a week, with immigration advocates alleging that detainees have held a week-long hunger strike over poor living conditions.

Those claims were echoed by Democratic politicians who visited the facility last week.

The Department of Homeland Security has denied those claims and says, "False smears are inciting violent riots" outside the facility.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) is calling out violent agitators, saying, "It's time to bring the temperature down" to allow family members to safely visit detainees.

"Let me be clear, violent, chaotic clashes hurt everyone. They put the lives of both protesters and law enforcement in danger. They take the focus away from people inside Delaney Hall and their families," Gov. Sherrill expressed.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka says the curfew will remain in place until further notice.
