CBS 13 Sports: Arizona Western falls to elimination bracket in World Series

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Arizona Western softball opened it NJCAA Division I Softball World Series run in Oxford, Alabama with a 3-0 loss to Iowa Western at Choccolocco Park.

The Matadors were held to just three hits offensively as Iowa Western scored early and controlled the game from the circle.

Head coach Joel Prickett said the team will look to improve its approach at the plate moving forward in the tournament.

Back in the Imperial Valley, two local teams remain alive in the CIF-San Diego Section playoffs.

The Central Spartans baseball team advanced to the Division III semifinals after defeating the Mar Vista Mariners and the Foothills Christian Knights in earlier rounds.

Central will now face Foothills Christian once again in a semifinal rematch under the tournament's double-elimination format.

Meanwhile, the Brawley Wildcats softball team continues its strong postseason run as the No. 1 seed in Division III.

Brawley opened the playoffs with an 11-2 win over the Coronado Islanders and will his them again in the semifinals with a trip to the CIF championship on the line.

Off the diamond, the Waste Management Phoenix Open announced another record-breaking year for charity fundraising.

Tournament officials revealed the 2026 PGA Tour event generated more than $20.1 million for Arizona nonprofits, marking the fourth consecutive year of record donations and the first time the tournament surpassed the $20 million mark in a single year.
