Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs trial becomes big business for online creators

NEW YORK (CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Tensions were high as the first day of jury deliberations in the Sean "Diddy" combs trial hit a major snag.

On Monday, the jury was dismissed after deliberating for more than five hours, and sent a note reading, "We have a juror, number 25, who we are concerned cannot follow your honor's instructions."

It is a case that has gripped the world, and those covering it online are suddenly finding themselves with a massive fan base.

Miss Pleasant, aka maker of "DaPopOffShow" on YouTube, is one of nearly a dozen livestreamers you'll find outside the federal courthouse in New York City while inside, Combs sits on trial facing life behind bars.

When asked what compels her to be at the courthouse every day, Pleasant says, "I’m nosy. It has celebrity, it has sex, it has crime, it has drugs."

Many have amassed a huge following by giving unedited access to the chaos surrounding the courthouse.

Tess Harper, another livestreamer, says she had about 5,000 followers before the trial. Now, she has about 11,000 followers. Harper also says she reads the comments and interact with people.

Some streamers read courtroom transcripts word for word, with one man reads off his own handwritten notes, while others chase down witnesses and combs family members.

"Just now, I had to run when the girls came, so I'm also doing the journalism, we doing that, but then I'm doing the TMZ, and I'm getting on happy feet sliding in for the count to catch my little footage," Harper shared.

"There is a type of way that we can talk to them that legacy media probably can't really give an opinion. We can be like, 'Uh huh I wasn't feeling that. I didn't like that,' and they feel a relatability," said Nique Leclair, another livestream.

Kealoha Conner was in marketing before a friend convinced her to step in front of the phone and livestream.

"The first day, I didn't think it was going to be anything and then boom, like that first day, I peaked at 20k and some change on people," Conner shared.

Now, she's not looking back.

"I want to go into journalism now because of this," Conner declared.

Harper says the trial is as big as the OJ Simpson trial adding, "We do want to get closure and understand what this case is gonna wrap up to be."

Combs is charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.

On Tuesday, the jury reached a verdict of four to five counts, two counts of sex trafficking and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

However, Judge Arun Subramanian said the jury were not able to reach a verdict on the racketeering conspiracy charge because jurors had "unpersuadable opinions on both sides."

The jury are set deliberate Wednesday morning.
