Central’s competition cheer team honored for second straight championship
Central's competition cheer team receives their championship rings after winning their second straight state titles.
EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Earlier this year the Central competition cheer team won their second straight CIF San Diego Section championship and their second straight state championship. On Thursday, the Spartans were celebrated and received their championship rings.
"When first saw them, I was definitely amazed because they have a lot of different details that are really cool to look at," Central captain Alyssa German.
"Before the ceremony, I took a little sneak peek," another captain Angel Paniagua said. "I just really like them. They're really pretty."
Today rewarded the seniors an opportunity to reflect on the good times they've shared.
Sot paniagua:" "I'm gonna remember being with my teammates the most," Paniagua said. "Things like getting ready in the trailer, going to hotels, and going to competitions."
Competitive cheer takes the spirit of traditional sideline routines and elevates them to a whole new level. However, Friday nights for these athletes are the perfect training ground.
"Competition team is on the sideline team, so we're able to use those Friday night games to practice our routines," head coach Gabby Robb said. "Whether it be some of the stunts or some of the pyramids. We're able to use that opportunity on the field in front of a big crowd."
After winning their first titles a year ago, the Spartans continued to improve their routine and it resulted in them being crowned back to back champions.
"Their determination this year definitely set them apart," Robb said. "They were always willing to push themselves and they were super competitive."
Following their CIF and state crowns, the Spartans competed at the national championships in Florida. A trip that provided an experience they will never forget.
"It was overall just a different experience going to the different parks," German said. "We had a great time in the hotels. We talked with each other and I think definitely the weather too."
The returning Spartans are already working for the three-peat next year.
