Lori Vallow Daybell murder conspiracy trial underway in Arizona
PHOENIX (KYMA, KECY/NBC) - Lori Vallow Daybell, the so-called "Doomsday Mom," is back in court Monday for her murder conspiracy trial.
Vallow Daybell, who is representing herself, is on trial with a charge of conspiracy to commit murder in the death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow.
During the trial, Treena Kay, the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Maricopa County, says Vallow Daybell and her now-deceased brother planned the killing for life insurance and Social Security benefits.
"As we go through this trial you will see photos of Charles s injury, photos of the crime scene and hear testimony that will prove that this was not self-defense," Kay explained.
Vallow Daybell says her husband came at them with a bat, and the shooting by her brother, Alex Cox, was self-defense.
"As the state has mentioned they're alleging that insurance money was my motive. Social Security was my motive. Spouses having insurance policies is not a crime. Collecting Social Security is not a crime. Self-defense is not a crime. A family tragedy is not a crime. It's a tragedy," Vallow Daybell expressed.
Last week, the jury was selected for the trial, and will consist of 13 men and three women, with 12 of the jurors deliberating and four of them serving as alternates.
Last month, a judge in the case ruled in favor of livestreaming the trial after Vallow Daybell argued against it, citing privacy concerns and accusing CourtTV of airing a misleading ad she claimed slandered her and her husband, Chad Daybell.
Vallow Daybell was already sentenced to life in prison in Idaho for murdering her two children and conspiring to kill her husband's former wife.
