Thousands of people gather in California city to honor Cesar Chavez

DELANO, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Thousands of farmworkers and supporters marched in California Monday in honor of Cesar Chavez.

They rallied in Delano, before marching to the Forty Acres site where Chavez held his first public fast.

This year's march focused on the Trump administration's recent immigrant policies, hoping to remind people about the workers who grow and harvest their food.

Farmworkers in California grow one-third of the country's vegetables and three-fourths of its fruit and nuts.

Chavez co-founded the United Farm Workers (UWF) Union with Dolores Huerta.

Monday would have been his 98th birthday.
