Latest on the arrest of a woman suspected of killing her wife

(KYMA, KECY/NBC) - There are new developments in the arrest of a woman accused of killing her estranged wife, a Cal Fire captain.

53-year-old Yolanda Olejniczak Marodi was named, by investigators, as the prime suspect in the February 17 stabbing death of Cal Fire Captain Rebecca Marodi, 49, an NBC affiliate in San Diego said.

The San Diego Sheriff's Department says the suspect was last seen crossing into Mexico in her vehicle through the San Ysidro border the same day of the murder.

Prior to the arrest, Mexicali law enforcement joined in the search for Olejniczak Marodi after police in the United States say she maybe in Mexico, but this past weekend she was found in a hotel in Mexicali.

Mexicali authorities say Olejniczak Marodi was located at a hotel named "Hacienda El Indio" en Mexicali.

Mexican and United States law enforcement agencies say it took about a month to find her.

"Authorities had many locations where the suspect could have been...the United States authorities suspected she was in San Felipe and in Mexicali due to the past connections she has and a past murder case and that's why we couldn't release much information," said Carlos Zuniga, Public Information Officer for Mexicali State Police (MSP).

MSP says Marodi did not put up a fight and was alone at the time of her arrest.

"She was not hiding from us. When we arrived, state police asked her for her name and she never refused to give it to us or try to trick us. She always had her documentations. We never thought she wanted to use a fake identity," said Laureano Carrillo Rodriguez, Secretary of Citizen Security.

The Mexican law enforcement says the suspect made some physical changes, like cutting her hair.

"These are times when many come to visit San Felipe and the Rosarito beaches with beaches here in Baja California, and perhaps her intentions was to go unnoticed, to change their image a little. However, it didn't work," said Zuniga.

After the arrest Olejniczak Marodi returned to the United States after Mexican State Security agents took her to the U.S. Marshals at the West Port of Entry.

According to the NBC affiliate in San Diego, Olejniczak Marodi was captured on surveillance cameras allegedly arguing with and physically assaulting Marodi, and then fled the home before Marodi's mother found her with multiple stab wounds to the neck chest and abdomen.

The NBC affiliate in San Diego said officials performed life-saving measures before Marodi died from her injuries.

Olejniczak Marodi spent 13 years in prison for stabbing her estranged husband in the fall of 2000, the NBC affiliate in San Diego said.
