Man arrested near former President Trump’s Coachella rally for having illegal weapons

UPDATE (4:20 PM): According to NBC News, a California sheriff believes his department thwarted a third assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump on Saturday.

"It's all going to be speculation about what his intentions were getting there. What we do know is he showed up with multiple passports with different names, an unregistered vehicle, with fake license plate, and loaded firearms. If you're asking me right now, I probably did have deputies that prevented the third assassination attempt," said Sheriff Chad Bianco with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department (RCSD).

During a press conference on Sunday, Bianco says Miller appears to be a member of "Sovereign Citizen," a far-right fringe anti-government group.

However, federal officials are not considering it an assassination attempt because the former president wasn't on site yet and it occurred at a checkpoint a quarter-mile away.

COACHELLA, Calif. (CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Authorities arrested a man on Saturday near former President Donald Trump's campaign rally in Coachella, California.

The event took place on Saturday.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) says deputies arrested 49-year-old Vem Miller of Las Vegas.

Investigators say Miller was sitting in an SUV At a checkpoint near the rally. They say he had illegal weapons on him that included a loaded handgun, a shotgun, and a high-capacity magazine.

Authorities detained Miller and he was jailed, but he later posted $5,000 bail and walked free.

RCSO is still investigating the incident, and they held a press conference Sunday afternoon. To watch the livestream of the press conference, see attached video.
