Murder preliminary hearing continues with new details

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Day four of the preliminary hearing on the man accused of murdering his ex-wife near Calexico in 2021.

More details are revealed as the suspect’s family members took the witness stand on Monday.

There were statements from additional witnesses including the suspect's sister and mother.

And new details about the relationship between the suspect and the victim.

According to the lead investigator, when the body of Rose Campos was found, black hairs were on her hands.

In Rose's car, a Gatorade bottle contained the suspect’s DNA.

When the sister of the suspect, Antonio Campos, took the stand, she spoke about the relationship Rose and Antonio had.

She stated that at first, Rose and Antonio’s relationship was great, but later became dysfunctional.

She also said marriage wasn't the only connection Rose and Antonio had.

The relationship's blood runs much deeper.

It turns out, Antonio is the half-brother to Rose's mother.

That is a big reason why Rose's family did not approve of Antonio, because of this, the couple had to hide their love.

Antonio's sister added that Rose would call to get a hold of Antonio but he tried to avoid her by telling her to say he wasn't around.

She said eventually, Antonio didn't want any type of communication with Rose.

The prosecutor spoke about the charges the suspect is facing.

“It’s kind of just going through the witnesses. The charges are murder with sexual assault allegations as well as stalking charges and so some of the elements of stalking involve repeated conduct so that is why we're are going through details to see what exactly happened," John Harter, Deputy District Attorney.

However, Antonio Campos' defense argued that none of the testimony so far is relevant.

“The previous days, last week we did not have evidence other than three witnesses. In my opinion, they were not. They did not introduce or did not relate much relevant information. We are hoping the scenario be the same for the next couple of witnesses,” stated Armando Galvan, Criminal Defense Attorney.

The preliminary hearing is set to end on Wednesday, July 5.

After that, the judge in the case will decide if there is enough evidence presented to move forward with a murder hearing.
