FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Tracking Extreme Heat Warnings across the Desert Southwest

Weather Authority / KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - A Weather Authority First Alert Action Day is now in effect across the Desert Southwest as a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat settles into the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for portions of southwest Arizona and southeast California, including Yuma and Imperial Counties. Temperatures are expected to soar well above normal through the end of the week.

On Wednesday, afternoon highs are tracking to reach between 107 and 114 degrees in Imperial County and between 106 and 112 degrees in Yuma County, creating potentially life-threatening conditions for anyone spending extended periods outdoors.

The combination of intense sunshine and limited overnight cooling will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses throughout the region.

With temperatures reaching their highest levels during the afternoon and early evening hours, residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned environments.

Those most vulnerable to the heat include older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals with underlying health conditions.

The NWS warns that prolonged exposure to these temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke if proper precautions are not taken.

Residents should also check on family members, neighbors, and pets to ensure they have access to adequate cooling and water.

While temperatures may fluctuate slightly from day to day, the overall weather pattern will remain extremely hot through at least Friday.

Forecast highs in both Yuma County and the Imperial Valley will continue to challenge seasonal averages as high pressure dominates the Desert Southwest.
