FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Extreme winds ravage air quality into early Monday morning

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - After what has been a brutal stretch of high winds and poor air quality, a recent rising trend of extreme gusts and worsening air has the Desert Southwest reaching pinnacle conditions throughout the rest of the weekend.

With the action day primarily in effect for the Imperial Valley, winds on the California side of our region are tracking to sit between 20-30 mph for the entirety of Sunday, with bursting gusts reaching upwards of 40-50 mph.

The conditions are calling for a wind advisory in Imperial County from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sundat evening.

As a result, we are also tracking very poor air quality in the Imperial Valley. An air quality alert is currently in effect and will last until midnight.

Yuma County will still experience breezy conditions Sunday, but not nearly to the same effect. Peak conditions will roll into the area at 6 p.m. when winds will be hovering around 20 mph.

Outside of these intense conditions, temperatures are tracking to max out at 93°F in both Yuma and El Centro at 5 p.m.

Heading into Monday, wind speeds are trending downwards and temperatures are expected to drop into the 80s.
