Weather Recap: March 2025

Weather Authority/ KYMA

March was an overall eventful month. We had cooler-than-normal temperatures for the majority of the month, plus we had a round for record-breaking temperatures. We also had some wind events and Yuma finally received some measurable rain. Take a look at it all below.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY-TV) - Pretty much all of March, we had more days below normal than we did above. The coolest day of 64 degrees on March 14th and the warmest day of 98 degrees on March 25th. The final full week of March we did have record-breaking warmth where Yuma did break a record of 97 degrees on March 24th.

Yuma also hit a record warm low temperature of 65 degrees March 25th.

We can't forget about the record warmth we had in the month of March from a unseasonable heat wave.

Yuma and El Centro broke daily record highs on March 24th. Yuma hit 97°, breaking the record of 96° that was set back in 2008. And El Centro hit 96°, beating their record of 93° that was set back in 1988

The following day, El Centro broke another daily record high on March 25th. El Centro hit 99°, beating their record of 94° that was set back in 1988 and 2022. Yuma was so close to tying and possibly beating the record, just wasn't enough.

The month of March was also wetter than most months.

Our rain total for the month leaves us at  0.07", and our monthly average is 0.39", so that leaves us below our monthly average of -0.32" for the month of March.  Even though we are below where we should be hey it's something and we will take it.

With the few rain events we had in March, Yuma's dry streak FINALLY came to an end at 215 days, the 4th longest streak on record.

So far for 2025, Yuma has accumulated 0.07", and comparing it with our 2025 yearly average, we actually should be at 1.16," which is below where we should be.

With what Yuma hasn't accumulated so far for 2025 and comparing it to our total around this same time back in 2024, we were at 2.16." So as far as rain totals go we are very behind for the year.

Our drought conditions also continue to worsen, at the start of the year the majority of the Desert Southwest was under severe drought with a chunk of La Paz in extreme.

Since then, pretty much all of the Desert Southwest has been under extreme drought. That means about 55% of the state is under extreme drought. Toward the end of the month, about 7% of the state of Arizona is now experiencing extreme drought, and it is visible on our area map.

Look at the two drought images to see the significant changes from early January to end of March.

At the start and end of the month, we did have a few wind events that called for a Weather Authority First Alert Action Day due to strong winds. The highest wind gusts recorded in Yuma for the month of March was on Sunday, March 2nd with a gust of 51 MPH.
